Kalix Löjrom is the roe of a small vendace fish swimming off the coast of Kalix in Northern Sweden. The roe must be hand extracted from the fish on the same day it was caught, and it is then thoroughly rinsed, dried and salted. Protection refers to the product Kalix Löjrom, which can only be extracted from vendace in the cold, brackish water of the Bothnian Bay where the water chemistry gives the roe its unique qualities. These characteristics make it possible to distinguish it from other fish roe products. Vendace is a small fish (20-30g) in the salmonidae family.

Caviar of Kalix - Tennstopet
The roe is VERY fine-almost like grains of sand. The cheaper lumpfish roe or salmon roe can be found in most supermarkets in the UK but my favourite roe is the bleak roe from Kalix in Sweden. It’s just delicious and I import a few packs to keep in the freezer on most trips to Sweden. Kalix roe or Kalix Löjrom is Sweden’s first food item to be awarded the Protected Designation of Origin status by the European Union. It’s like Swedish caviar as the Kalix roe refers to the eggs of the vendace fish that swims in the Bothnian Bay off the coast in Kalix.
